On my way to work this morning I pull up to the stop sign on main street. A little black Corolla goes blowing by at 45-50mph (25mph speed limit). I pull out behind it. The Corolla passes the town cop going the other direction, he waits until I’m by, flips on the red/blues and turns around. He blows past me, turns off his lights, catches the Corolla, follows for a block, then pulls into the church parking lot, never pulling the car over.

I think about it on my way here: The black Corolla is a village board member’s car!

I guess if you’re on the board or a firefighter in this town, you can drive double the speed limit, drive home from the bar totally plowed, and generally do whatever the hell you want in this town.

In my town the local cops won’t mess with most local people unless you’re doing something blatant, or yeah if you’re drunk then they’ll bust you for sure. But especially in the winter when it’s quieter, I pass them almost every day, in a line of cars at times, other times alone, always 10-15 over. No worries, they wave, I wave back. It’s a lovely application of “reasonable and prudent,” even if the signs say the limit is 40 or whatever.
